Our Story

Since the beginning, the history of Science Interactive has been one of innovation in the name of education.

Our Story

In the early 90s, distance education was in its early stages and thought to be an impossibility for the sciences. When Colorado Mountain College asked our founders, Linda and Peter Jeschofnig, to recreate a tactical lab experience for distance learners they immediately set out to make the impossible a reality.

1992

Colorado Mountain College asks Peter to invent a way to teach chemistry lab courses online. Peter started brainstorming.

1993

Using the principles of microscale chemistry, Peter and Linda develop the very first distance laboratory courses on the market and start teaching their first semester of remote students.

The response was overwhelming. Students were delighted to engage with the labs on their own terms and interest began to pour in from professors within the academic community.

1994 – 1999

Linda expands the kit-building operation, working out of her garage and hiring students to help build lab kits for upcoming semesters.

1996

Due to high demand, the Jeschofnigs hire a manufacturer to scale their rapidly growing business.

2000

Hands-On Labs is officially incorporated and the brand is born.

Hands-On Labs begins working with various experts in both science and online education to upgrade existing kits while also expanding into new disciplines.

2005

Hands-On Labs continues to grow at an unprecedented speed as market demand increases for viable online lab solutions.

2006

HOL hires its first real employees, including a sales rep and a head of marketing. Prior to this point, all branding and expansion had been done by word-of-mouth.

Hands-On Labs begins to win awards outside of the education industry as an innovative ed-tech company and woman-owned business.

2009

HOL is listed as one of Colorado’s Top 50 Companies to Watch as well as a Top 100 Woman-Owned Business.

2011-2013

HOL is listed on the Inc. 5000, an annual ranking of the fastest-growing private companies.

Our Story

Within the next decade, Hands-On Labs began to evolve beyond the production of lab kits and into a comprehensive lab solution provider, including curriculum as well as evaluations with each experiment.

2014

HOL upgrades to a digital software system for content delivery, laying the groundwork for its eventual shift to a proprietary learning platform.

2015

HOL begins development of the only learning platform designed by instructors for science instruction. The HOL Cloud would be launched the following year.

Seeing the power of the Hands-On Labs solution in higher-education and its opportunity for growth, Science Interactive Group (SIG) acquires the company.

2017

HOL relaunches its updated Virtual Microscope. The V-Scope (2.0) is a fully interactive virtual compound microscope that can replace the physical microscope in any kit.

2019

SIG acquired eScience Labs, another online lab provider, and merged it with HOL to form Science Interactive. SIG also partnered with Odigia to offer ESL content in conjunction with Odigia’s OER resources and platform.

As new partners, Hands-On Labs and eScience Labs merge their strengths to start developing a best of breed product under the Science Interactive logo. By cultivating innovative partnerships and leveraging cutting-edge technology, the combined teams aim to dominate the lab solution vertical.

HOL wins Education Innovation of the Year at the Cloud Awards and takes home the Tech & Learning Award of Excellence in the Software category for the HOL Cloud.

2020

Science Interactive begins developing digital content at neck-breaking speed:

  • Develops virtual options for biology, chemistry, and A&P courses
  • Partners with Biodigital to offer virtual dissections with new digital course options
  • Partners with Odigia to offer labs alongside OER content
